When Should I Replace My Shower Curtain?

Let’s get down to business: does your shower have glass doors or a curtain? Sure, there’s no right or wrong answer, but if you happen to have the latter half, how often do you clean and replace your shower curtain? Unlike a glass door that can be wiped down with a cloth and cleaning spray, a curtain needs a tad more TLC. If you’re not sure when you should replace your curtain, here are some things to consider:

What is Your Curtain Made Of?

Many household shower curtains are made from either plastic or fabric, depending on the make or model. That being said, these curtains can get a tad dingey after a shower — and that “dinge” can linger around much longer than you think. So, before you start ripping down your current curtain, here’s what you’ll need to know about each material.

Plastic

Known to be one of the most common of shower curtains, plastic can withstand just about any droplet of water, helping keep your bathroom water-free. Although this is a perk for plastic curtains, there comes a time when you’ll have to clean them. It’s recommended to toss them in the wash at least once a month on a very gentle rinse cycle, with a moderate detergent.

Fabric

Ah, the fabric shower curtain! Unlike a plastic curtain, you’ll need to have a plastic shower liner to go behind it — this will prevent any water from splashing around. Now, unlike plastic, you’ll have to wash this type of curtain at least twice a month. The reason being is that there’s more of a chance for debris to cling to fabric, rather than plastic. Luckily, all you’ll have to do it toss the fabric curtain into the washing machine, and the rest is history!

When Should I Replace my Shower Curtain?

The moment you’ve been waiting for: when should you replace your shower curtain? Depending on the state of the curtain, this can vary. Typically, if this curtain is used in excess, then there’s a higher chance that it will be worn and that more hidden germs could be lingering on it — no matter how many times you wash it. Therefore, it’s best to replace it at least once a year (or every few months, if your curtains tend to wear down at a faster pace)!
